Chronicles of the Inexperienced Cook: Trying New Foods

If you’ve ever tried to change your diet, whether in an attempt to lose weight or just to eat a little bit healthier, you’ve probably come up against a few foods that you know are good for you, but you just can’t bring yourself to eat. When I first started changing my diet, I felt like I was surviving on the same three or four meals because I was too afraid to try new things, or at least that’s the excuse I was telling myself.

I eventually got to the point where I couldn’t stand the sight of boiled chicken or the same old boring salad I had been eating for lunch everyday, so I decided to try to change things up. Part of this change of heart came by the help of a friend who happens to be an amazing cook and is also very health oriented. She had my mom and I over for dinner, and the menu sounded a bit frightening, including a winter root vegetable dish that had sweet potatoes, parsnips, and butter nut squash – all words that made me cringe and contemplate how hungry I really was.

In the end, I trusted my friends cooking expertise and tried every dish, and guess what? It was one of the best meals I have ever had. It was then that I realized that, with the help of some herbs and spices and cooking things a little bit differently, you can actually enjoy something that is actually healthy! Hard to believe, I know, but it’s true!

After a while, I started trying to make some of my own healthy dishes, and I’ve found that by focusing on allowing myself to have foods that are good for my body rather than focusing on missing out on foods that are not necessarily healthy makes it so much more fun to try different foods. Now, considering the fact that my cooking skills are still rather limited, I haven’t been able to try any extremely elaborate dishes as of yet, but my mom’s patience and willingness to try slightly burned creations has allowed me to keep learning.
