Whenever I try to explain to someone what I do here on WordPress or the videos I upload on YouTube and the friends I am making online, the reaction I normally get is “Ohhhh…well that’s, uh, nice…” This response is almost always accompanied with a look that screams “are you insane? Have you ever heard the words “Craigslist killer?!?!”
Not too many people understand the amazing communities that can be found on sites such as WordPress and YouTube, but I really wish I could make them understand what they’re missing out on. Last night I spent two hours on a Skype call with a bunch of YouTubers who I’ve never seen beyond the videos they post online, and you know what? Aside from my Skype crashing every 20 minutes, I had an amazing time!
When I reluctantly left the call to go to bed, I found myself smiling uncontrollably and thinking how blessed I am to have met these amazing people. Even though we were scattered across multiple time zones, it felt no different than as if we were all sitting in the same room laughing and having a conversation.
You can call me crazy if you want to (you might actually be right), but discovering these two online communities has been one of the best things to ever happen to me. Although they are very different from each other, I love them both and the different people that stem from them.
For once I actually feel like I’ve found a place where I fit in, somewhere to belong. It’s amazing how this little thing called the internet has not only allowed me to grow as a writer, but it’s allowed me to create relationships that are just as real as any other, even through the use of glowing screens and WiFi.
